Overview

RxNav has a number of views (tabs) which display related information of the selected concept.

The RxNorm Graph View is the default view and displays the selected concept with its related RxNorm concepts.

The RxNorm Properties View contains the RxNorm properties related to the concept.

The NDC View displays the National Drug Code information for the concept.

The RxTerms View displays the RxTerms vocabulary information related to the concept.

The NDF-RT View displays the NDF-RT information related to the concept.

The Pill Images View displays drug images for the concept.

The Class View displays drug class hierarchies from several drug vocabularies.

The Interaction View displays the drug interactions with the selected concept.

RxNav Graph View (RxNorm Graph Tab)

The RxNorm Graph View is the default tab when RxNav is started. When the user enters RxNav, the options for the graph are displayed on the left, and the graph components to the right of the options. The default graph is the classic graph, which contains eleven tables containing the RxNorm term types. image of RxNorm graph

After a search is done, the RxNorm graph is populated with the concept found plus the related concepts.

The concept found from the search string is highlighted. By clicking on a concept in one of the tables, that concept string becomes the search term and all of its related components will then be displayed.

To populate the display, RxNav uses a set of default paths to traverse from the starting concept term type to find related concepts of the different term types. The path table shows the default paths used for each starting term type.

Graph Types
RxNav provides a classic graph view, a simple graph view and a table view, selectable under the Views label in the options:

The simple view provides two tables, one containing the ingredients and related products, the other for brand names and related branded products. The figure below contains the simple view for the ingredient ezetimibe.

The table view provides the same information as the classic view, but in a single table. The figure below contains the table view for the brand Vytorin.

Graph Filters
RxNav provides filters for the classic and simple graphs:

The selection of a filter implies that the graph should contain only those entries. For example, selecting Human means only those drugs containing the H or HV icon are selected for the graph. Selecting Human and Vet will result in only those drugs displaying the HV icon are selected.

Group or Form Display
For the classic view, the user has the option of selecting either Group Term Types (default) or Form Term Types.

Drug Label Link
This link provides the drug label information from DailyMed.

MedlinePlus Link
The MedlinePlus link allows users to view MedlinePlus drug information using the MedlinePlus Connect API. When the MedlinePlus link is selected, the MedlinePlus results web page is displayed.

Drug Information Button
The link labeled "Drug Portal" connects to the Drug Information Portal to provide links about related drug information from both NLM and other sources.

Download Button
The download button copies the information in the graph to a file with comma separated fields.

Default Paths

The default path table below shows the paths through the term types that are taken by RxNav to display the related concepts. (Note: these are also the paths used by the RxNorm API in the functions getAllRelatedInfo and getRelatedByType.)

The first and third columns indicate the starting term type associated with the selected identifier and the ending term type.
The second and fourth columns are the list of term types in order (the path) to get the related concepts of the ending term type from the starting term type.

[1] There is a direct path from PIN to BN, but this is not used as it results in many brands that are not linked to the PIN on the generic side.

[2] There is a direct path between MIN and PIN, but that direct path is not used because it only applies to cases where there are PINs of the same ingredient.


The RxNorm Properties View (RxNorm Properties Tab)

The tab labeled "RxNorm Properties" allows the user to view the RxNorm properties for the selected concept. These properties include the RxNorm names, codes, attributes, and the vocabulary sources of other synonyms. A sample view is shown below.

The NDC View (NDC Tab)

The tab labeled "NDC" allows the user to view the National Drug Codes along with its properties for a clinical drug, clinical pack, branded drug or branded pack. The tab will be enabled when a clinical drug, clinical pack, branded drug or branded pack concept is selected ( by single-clicking on the concept). To view the NDC information for that concept, simply select the NDCs tab. The default table is the current NDCs. A sample table is shown below.

The RxTerms View (RxTerms Tab)

The RxTerms view in RxNav provides the RxTerms information for a clinical or branded drug. RxTerms is a drug interface terminology derived from RxNorm for prescription writing or medication history recording.

The NDF-RT View (NDF-RT Tab)

The NDF-RT view in RxNav provides tabular displays of the National Drug File - Reference Terminology (NDF-RT) properties and relations of the selected clinical drug or ingredient in RxNav. NDF-RT is produced by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. NDF-RT is used for modeling drug characteristics including ingredients, chemical structure, dose form, physiologic effect, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics and related diseases. The Pill Images View (Pill images Tab)

The tab labeled "Pill Images" allows the user to view drug images from the RxImageAccess API for a clinical drug, branded drug or branded pack.

Class View (Class View Tab)

The Class View contains drug class hierarchies from ATC, MeSH and NDF-RT. The Views menu on the left of the screen allows the selection of the class hierarchy to display. The ATC graph is selected as default.

A sample graph with annotations is shown below. Note that there is a widget for zooming the graph as well as positioning. Also, clicking on a class node will link to RxClass for that drug class and display the drug members for that class.

Interaction View (Interaction View Tab)

The Interaction View displays the list of drugs which interact with the selected RxNorm concept.
